Amid Rising Uncertainty, Professionals Feel More Vulnerable to Layoffs

“We’re seeing heightened layoff activity across several industries… (and) white-collar jobs, which historically have been insulated, are feeling the pressure,” Levine told Inc. in email detailing the spreading job insecurity among professionals. “On top of that, we’ve seen major layoffs at giants such as Starbucks, as well as cuts in beauty brands, oil and gas, banking, and some of the larger retail companies.”
Susan Levine, CEO speaks with Inc. Magazine about the rising uncertainty amongst professionals and shares her insight on proactive job searches and strategic career planning as industries face growing layoffs and economic shifts.
“There’s so much uncertainty right now, and uncertainty breeds fear,” Levine said. “Across industries, we’re seeing companies take a more cautious approach — cutting costs, restructuring teams, and slowing hiring as they brace for economic shifts…The uncertainty isn’t just about today — it’s about what’s coming next, and that’s what has so many employees feeling uneasy.”
“You have to stay ahead of the layoffs… (and) if there are rumblings about cutbacks in your industry, don’t wait — start your job search now while you’re still employed,” Levine advises worried professionals, even as she urges them to prove their value in current employers. “Make yourself indispensable at work, yes, but don’t assume that alone will protect you. Strengthen your network, talk to recruiters, update your resume, and be proactive. At this point, a ‘Plan B’ should already be your ‘Plan A.’”
